To Subsidize Locals, Ontario Opens Doors To Foreign Students

The Canadian province of Ontario hopes to create 20,000 new seats in its universities and plans to increase foreign enrollment by 50% in the next 5 years.  Very ambitious numbers for the most populous province in Canada.

One must wonder where they hope to get these 20,000 students from?  Currently, the biggest feeder countries into Canada are:

1. China 41,082 (33.2%)
2. South Korea 30,075 (24.3%)
3. United States 11,853 (9.6%)
4. France 8,353 (6.7%)
5. Japan 7,793 (6.3%)
6. India 6,937 (5.6%)
7. Taiwan 4,747 (3.8%)
8. Hong Kong 4,484 (3.6%)
9. Mexico 3,830 (3.1%)
10. Germany 2,941 (2.4%)

I would expect Ontario to get most of these new students from Asia, as Asian enrollment at Canadian schools has more than doubled since 2005.
