NACE Releases Top 10 Starting Salaries For Fresh Graduates. Female Engineers Looking More Attractive By The Day.

The National Association of Colleges and Employers has just released their top 10 starting salaries table.   Very few surprises.  The only surprise I see actually is that engineering wages have not been hurt by outsourcing as much as most other industries.  Anybody familiar with engineering outsourcing, please feel free to comment on this.

Petroleum Engineering $86,220
Chemical Engineering $65,142
Mining & Mineral Engineering (incl. geological) $64,552
Computer Science $61,205
Computer Engineering $60,879
Electrical/Electronics & Communications Engineering $59,074
Mechanical Engineering $58,392
Industrial/Manufacturing Engineering $57,734
Aerospace/Aeronautical/Astronautical Engineering $57,231
Information Sciences & Systems $54,038

Also, one stat really bugs me.  The fact that petroleum engineers  are at the top with $86,220 and astronautical engineers at the bottom with $57,231 really illustrates the perverse incentives facing the brightest American graduates.  We are willing to pay fresh graduates top dollar to aid in the destruction of the environment while we shaft graduates who might find a way for us to inhabit other planets. You might think  we are a long way from colonizing new planets, but at the rate we are destroying the environment, we have no choice but to inhabit new planets.  Soon.  Maybe we will start paying astronautical engineers a little more when NYC becomes the world’s busiest aquarium.
